Two Original Concert Programs

Two original programs from 1921 and 1922 from performances directed by the Italian composer and pianist.  Both from the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, where Alfano organized concerts for the Youth Orchestra from the local Liceo Musicale.  The performances included not only standard works, but also new works by composition students of Alfano.  Most of the performances were conducted by alumni of the school, though Alfano is billed as the Director. Both in fine condition.  Each 6.6 x 9.75 inches (17 x 24.7 cm.).

New York: The Sackett & Willhelms Corporation. 1917. Signed Dakar "Freres du Theatre d'Afrique" Program

An unusual signed program from a 26 May, 1957 an appearance by the legendary dancer, singer, and actress at the Théâtre du Palais, Dakar during the centenary of the city. The program "Un Hommage à Josephine Baker," featured the "Freres du Theatre d'Afrique / Theatre de L'Ouest Africain / Union Artistique de la Jeunesse Guineenne," with Demba Kanouté performing a poem composed for the occasion, and Mamadou Kouyaté ("coraïste virtuose") and concluded with the official proclamation awarding to Josephine Baker the title of "Présidente d'Honneur de L'Union." Baker has signed "votre grande soeur [your big sister] Josephine Baker" in blue ink to the first page. 8 pp. Gray printed wrappers. In very fine condition.

1929 Premiere Saison Program

Profusely illustrated 1929 program for the Opera Privé de Paris production of “Prince Igor” by Borodine. 9.5 x 12.5 inches. 28 pp. Nine tipped-in color plates, including a portrait of its star singer, Maria Kousnetzoff; and, by Konstantin Korovine, six character costumes and two stage sets. The color cover is by J. Bilibine. Also included are full-page portraits of Madame Alexandra Balachova and of baritone Michel Benois, as well as many smaller photographs of other participants such as orchestra director Emil Cooper and choreographer-dancer Michel Fokine (who, a few years later, developed the famous Ballet based on Prince Igor). Amusing concert program for an 1889 concert of sacred music at the Baptist Meeting House in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, written throughout in a precious "ye olde English" style. The concert took place "on ye evening of Thursday, May 9, 1889 at earlie candle lighte, wh occurs by ye Olde Farmers' Almanack, and not ye new fangled time, at 7.45 of ye clocke... For a true and faithful chronicle of all ye events wh will then come to pass, see ye lyst wh is in ye middle of ye booke [etc., etc.]" 16 pp. Original green wrapper with some edge nicks; overall toning; otherwise in very good condition. 7.5 x 10 inches (19 x 26 cm).

"Waiting for Godot" - Original 1956 Program

Original playbill from the Broadway debut of Beckett's absurdist play at the John Golden Theatre, beginning on April 19, 1956. Starring Bert Lahr (also the original Cowardly Lion), the play had opened in Florida in January 1956 and bombed, before its more successful Broadway production that spring. Overall age wear and one vertical crease, but otherwise in very good condition. 20 pp. 6.5 x 9 inches (16.5 x 23 cm).

All-Beethoven 1889 Program Performed at the Berlin Philharmonie

Original Philharmonie-Concert-Zeitung dated 31 October 1889 for an all-Beethoven program, including the Trio in B-flat major, Piano Sonata in F minor, Op. 57, Sonata for Piano and Violin in A major, the Romances in G and F major for violin, and the Trio in D major, all performed by Heinrich Barth, Heinrich de Ahna, and Robert Hausmann, who had been performing subscription concerts as a trio since 1878. This Beethoven-Abend was part of a new series of 'popular' (cheap) concerts they'd started at the Philharmonie earlier in the same year.  The trio would continue performing together for another 20 years, with de Ahna replaced upon his death in 1892 by Emanuel Wirther.  Most of the booklet is dedicated to advertisements for every sort of local business you can imagine, from chocolatiers to harmonium sellers and lamp oil providers to fan repairmen.  Light wear and surface creases along spine, else fine, 20 pp., 5.5 x 8.75 inches (14 x 22.25 cm.). 1841 Buckingham Palace Concert Program - THE COPY OF GEORGE SMART

Original program from an orchestral concert given at Buckingham Palace on May 21, 1841, featuring an early performance of Beethoven's Wellington's Victory (Grand Battle Sinfonia) and addressed by hand to the important English conductor of Beethoven's works, George Smart. The program lists works by Beethoven, Cimarosa, Mendelssohn, Strauss, and Spohr, concluding with the Grand Battle Sinfonia, which commemorates Wellington's victory at the battle of Vitoria in 1813. Sir George Smart, a guest at this occasion, had been the first to conduct the work in England about 20 years earlier. Printed on p. 1 of a bifolium and addressed to Smart on p. 3. An interesting signed poster from the innovative and influential American composer, bearing an especially large and bold autograph signature in red ink. Pictorial poster, framed, with plexiglass.  17 x 22 inches; 43 x 55 cm. Signed by John Cage at the bottom right of the poster, from a week-long residency at Stanford in celebration of Cage's 80th birthday. The event included an exhibition of Cage's prints, two panel discussions of his work, the delivery of an original lecture, a "Musicircus," and two evening performances of Cage's music. Read More...

A rare signed halftone Houston Rogers photograph from La Divina's performances of "Tosca" at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, 1964. A single sheet removed from the February 8, 1964 issue of The Illustrated London News, small tears, creases and mounting remnants around the edges of the sheet have been matted out of view, a few small blemishes to the image showing, else fine. The full sheet 10 x 13 inches, photograph 8.7 x 10.9 inches (25 x 34cm; 22 x 28 cm). Archivally matted with only the image showing, 11 x 14 inches overall.
